 Lodge History

Our name originates from the Rainbow Gold Mine located on our property about a mile below our lodge in El Dorado Canyon. The Rainbow Gold Mine was developed in 1800’s during the heat of the California Gold rush era. It was a very productive mine averaging about $50 dollars per day and gold was selling for $18.00 an ounce. In the 1850’s there was a boarding house adjacent to the mine. The mine opening and an old wood burning stove are the only remains of the Rainbow Gold Mine. There is also a second mine that can be visited that was operational until the 1950’s, it is well within walking distance of our lodge.

Here in the Gold country, you and your horse can easily access the trail as many trailheads start at the lodge.  If you are an experienced rider, an endurance rider or just looking for a pleasant, relaxing  option - we have you covered.

The view from our decks boasts over seventy five miles of unbroken mountains and forest. We have deer, quail, fox, and bear to name a few of the frequently spotted animals.

Somewhere over the Rainbow Lodge is a bird watcher’s paradise; there are numerous species of birds that live in the area year round, including large flocks of Blue Birds, Red Tail Hawks, Golden Eagles, and Falcons, Black Headed Gross Beaks, A variety of Wood Peckers, Owls, Flickers, and Band Tail Pigeons.

Somewhere Over the Rainbow Lodge has many old growth trees that are well over a thousand years old in addition to copious amounts of Ponderosa Pines, Sugar Pines, Cedar, White Fir, Dogwood, and Black Oak.

The Tevis Cup
- The Tevis Cup 100 Miles One Day Ride represents the Foundation's commitment to the ideals of a pioneering experience along historically significant trails that traverse the scenic wilderness of the Sierra Nevada Mountains from east of Squaw Valley to Auburn. Since the origin of modern day endurance riding that started with this event in 1955, thousands of horsemen and their athletic steeds have sought the challenges of the Tevis Cup Ride. The event counts among its alumni many experts of American and International horsemanship. Somewhere Over the Rainbow Lodge is a Crystal Sponsor for the Tevis Cup and offers lodging where you can bring your horses.

The Western States Endurance Run, known commonly as the Western States 100, is a 100 mile long (161 km) ultramarathon that takes place on trails in California's Sierra Nevada annually on the last weekend of June. The race starts at the base of the Squaw Valley ski resort and finishes at the Placer High School track in Auburn, California. Runners climb a cumulative total of 18000 feet (5500 m) and descend a total of 23000 feet (7000 m) on mountain trails before reaching the finish. Because of the length of the race, the race begins at 5:00 A.M. and continues through the day and into the night. Runners finishing before the 30 hour overall time limit for the race receive a bronze belt buckle, while runners finishing in under 24 hours receive a silver belt buckle.

Sierra Natural History Hike - There is more to the Lodge than only what is inside. Learn about the hawks soaring overhead, the trees growing tall and the rocks beneath your feet. While exploring this fascinating and diverse environment hikers will investigate botany, geology, and biology while taking a trip back through the natural and cultural history of this area. You can track the footsteps of a bobcat, interpret the language of the birds or drink pine needle tea. The guides are experienced environmental educators who love sharing direct experience with nature. Hikes are for all ages and can be tailored to personal interests and comfort level.
